A butterfly looking insect, with large hairy grey wings with brown, white and black markings. Long legs with spurs, tiny eyes and long antennae. The larvae create a tube-like shelter from sand or gravel for protection and they live below surface preying on other insects. Once it is adult, the lifespan is short, resting by day and at night attracted by light. When disturbed it dashes off. ⇔ l. 20-25 mm They are not butterflies since they have hairs instead of scales on the wings. LA: There are many subspecies that resemble each other, this is a larger European one. Most measure between 10-30 mm.
