A damselfly with thin black lines on the body. The ♂ is blue with black and on the first rear segment has a black marking resembling a mushroom, the rear segments are blue and those adjacent are black. The ♀ is black with yellow, blue, green or brown markings although less brightly coloured. The black on the rear can be more extensive. Flies from May to October, sometimes found in large groups close to water. ⇔ l. 32-35 mm syn. Common blue damselfly, Northern bluet LA: ≈ The COENAGRION PUELLA (Azure damselfly) is bluer and on the second segment, the black marking is 'U' shaped. ≈ The rare COENAGRION HASTULATUM (Spearhead bluet) which is slightly larger and the ♂ has green eyes.
