Large yellow black hoverfly, black white striped breast, lemon yellow rear with distinctive black markings and 2 white markings at the rear. Prefers moist areas, living on nectar. Larvae live in the water feeding on bacteria and are equipped with a long breathing tube. ⇔ l. 12-18 mm LA: ≈ The HELOPHILUS PENDULUS (Dangling sun-lover) is a little smaller with a thin black nose line, the rear has more white markings. ≈ The EPISYRPHUS BALTEATUS (Marmalade hoverfly) is dark yellow on the rear with different markings and a bronze coloured breast.
