Grey-brown ringed grasshopper with remarkable red wings, short antennae and round bulb eyes. The red wings have a black rear edge and are only visible during a large hovering jump. Found mostly on rocky terrain where the camouflage colour is beneficial until the moment the wings are spread. The colour deters predators. ⇔ l. 15-22 mm South and Central Europe. LA: ≈ The OEDIPODA CAERULESCENS (Blue-winged grasshopper) can be differentiated by the colour when the wings are opened.
