A small duck with a short grey beak with a dark tip and a white belly. The courting plumage of the ♂ is a rust red head with a yellow forehead marking and a grey back. After summer the breast, back and head become dark brown. Central on each wing is a large white marking and the wing rear edge is black green. The ♀ has a dark brown head, breast and flanks and on her back variable black marks. Her wings are brown with a thin white band and a black green rear edge. Outside breeding season in large groups, feeding on grass patches. ⇔ l. 45-52 cm syn. MARECA PENELOPE A migratory bird, nests up north and winters in central Europe, North Africa and Asia. LA: ≈ The ♂ of both ANAS ACUTA (Northern pintail) and AYTHYA FERINA (Pochard) misses the light coloured forehead marking.
