Large white bird with black quills, a long red beak and long legs. The young are paler. They pair for life. Nests on treetops, or on specially placed poles on roofs or churches. On the nest, they make a distinctive clattering noise. Mostly mating for life re-using the same nest. ⇔ l. 100-115 cm Migratory birds travelling in large flocks and using thermals to cross big distances. Prefers land routes rather than crossing the Mediterranean Sea. The national bird of Belarus and Lithuania.
