Smooth thin snake with striking markings. Dark brown circular markings on its back with lighter edges, and a row of smaller markings on its sides. The tail is thin and long. It prefers dry warm areas near shrubs. Eats small mammals and reptiles as well as larger insects like grasshoppers. ⇔ l. 140-160 cm syn. COLUBER HIPPOCREPIS Lives around the Mediterranean and hibernates depending on the local temperature.
