Bright orange-red butterfly. The wing upper surface of the ♂ is orange with a black edge and thin white fringe, the front wings have two black markings. The ♀ has orange front wings with brown-black markings and brown rear wings with an orange band. The front wing under surface is orange with black markings and a grey edge, the rear wing under surface is blue-grey with white-edged black markings and an orange band. ⇔ wsp. 27-40 mm The subspecies LYCAENA DISPAR BATAVA is found exclusively in the Netherlands. LA: ≈ The LYCAENA PHLAEAS (Small copper) and LYCAENA VIRGAUREAE (Scarce copper) are missing the blue on the under surface. ≈ The LYCAENA HIPPOTHOE (Purple-edged copper) is dark orange with more brown on top and paler on the under surface.
