Large dark brown vulture. The beak and face vary in colour from pink to blue. Prefers forested areas with sloping areas to nest in, looks for carrion while flying. Lives in a limited area in central Spain and south east Europe. ⇔ l. 100-110 cm syn. Black vulture, Monk vulture, Eurasian black vulture The largest and heaviest of European birds of prey with square wings that are very flat while flying. The lighter claws are visible against the dark tail from below. LA: ≈ The GYPS FULVUS (Griffon vulture) is lighter in colour and has a white collar. The claws are difficult to see from below.
