Black white waterbird with a pointed black beak, the back is dark brown to black, the belly is white and along the black wing a white stripe. In winter the throat and cheeks are white as well. Despite the short wings, they are able flyers. The young jump off the cliff into the sea before they can fly so that they can continue feeding. After breeding the birds live full time on the sea. ⇔ l. 39-42 cm syn. Common murre, Common guillemot, Thin-billed murre A resident bird breeding among seashore cliffs in north Europe but small colonies exist also on the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal. LA: ≈ The ALCA TORDA(Razorbill) has a thicker beak. ≈ And the FRATERCULA ARCTICA (Atlantic puffin) has a colourful beak.
