Brown-grey goose with a white rump, black banded markings over the belly and a white ring around the beak base. The beak is orange or pink in colour. Young birds are missing the white ring. While breeding, found in pairs, otherwise in large groups. They graze on meadows as well as on marsh and like other geese, they accept other species amongst them. ⇔ l. 65-78 cm syn. Greater white-fronted goose, Greater whitefront, Specklebelly A migratory bird breeding on still water and wintering more to the south depending on the climate, always close to water though. There are five subspecies a little lighter or darker in colour and separated by breeding areas. LA: ≈ The ANSER ANSER (Greylag goose) and ANSER FABALIS (Bean goose) are larger without the beak base ring and have no belly markings. ≈ The ANSER ERYTHROPUS (Lesser white-fronted goose) is much smaller and has a white ring all the way to its crown and a yellow eye edge.
