Grey head, breast and tail with a white belly and pink beak. The wings are darker and more grey-brown in colour. The ♂ is a little brighter in colour than the ♀. Found both in pine as well as deciduous woodland. In winter in parks and gardens and often spotted at feeding tables. ⇔ l. 13-17 cm There are several subspecies that were considered separate species at one time but they mix and hence they are difficult to keep apart. Partly migratory. Birds breeding in Canada sometimes wander into the EU.
