A sturdy heron with black crown and back, grey wings and a white breast and belly. The legs are green. In summer plumage 2 large neck plumes appear and the legs become pink-red. The young are brown with yellowish markings. Active at twilight and at night along forested banks, resting at daytime in groups. ⇔ l. 58-65 cm syn. Black-crowned night heron A migratory bird. LA: ≈ The IXOBRYCHUS MINUTUS (Little bittern) is more yellow and much smaller. ≈ The BOTAURUS STELLARIS (Bittern) is more yellow and larger.
