Bright red neck and main shield with a black head and legs. The black feelers are feathered for the ♂ and comb-like for the ♀. The back shield broadens out at the end. Found in forest, forest edges, on flowers and on dead trees. Feeds on sap from trees, flowers and honeydew. The larvae feed on larvae of other beetles and live under the bark. ⇔ l. 14-18 mm The largest fire beetle in Europe. LA: ≈ The CERAMBYCIDAE (Longhorn beetles) are less bright and their shields do not broaden out.
