A sturdy hairy bovine with a wide head and high shoulders. Rough dark brown fur mainly covers the neck and shoulders giving it a heavier look. Both sexes have horns. It moults in spring when large clumps of fur fall off. Active at night and in the morning, resting during the daytime. Mostly in herds led by an older cow. ⇔ hbl. 257-270 cm, sh. 190-195 cm, tl. 50 cm syn. Wisent, European wood bison Was extinct at the start of the last century but successfully reintroduced.
