A large slender hawker with a marked dark body. The body is hairy and a brown top with yellow-greenish sides with 2 black lines. The head is greenish yellow with black markings. The black rump has small yellow greenish markings for the ♀ with brown eye markings instead of lines on her shoulder and her wings have a brown front. The ♂ has blue markings on the dark rear section, yellow-green shoulder lines and blue eyes. It prefers wetlands with reeds. ⇔ l. 55-65 mm syn. Common hawker, Moorland hawker, Sedge darne LA: ≈ The AESHNA GRANDIS (Brown hawker) is brown and has a brown body with 2 yellow sidelines.
