A small duck with light eye outline, black cheeks, short bill and dark wings. The ♂ has a black bill with a pink band and very long tail feathers. In summer plumage it is black brown with some white, the winter plumage is reversed in colour. The ♀ has a dark cap and white face and neck with a blunt tail. Her body and wings are dark brown coloured with lighter coloured flanks and belly, the beak is black. Breeds in northern tundra and winters at sea where it swims easily on waves diving for fish and shellfish. Live in flocks except when breeding. ⇔ l. 40-47 cm, excluding ♂ tail. LA: ≈ The ANAS ACUTA (Northern pintail) is much larger with a grey beak and the ♂ has a white neck marking. ≈ The SOMATERIA MOLLISSIMA (Eider) is also larger and the ♂ has a dark cap and a thick yellow black beak.
